This is an antique estate cameo, pearl and 14K yellow gold brooch measuring 1 3/4 inches (44.5 MM) long by 1 1/4 inches (32.4 MM) wide with a hinged jump ring bail enabling it to also be worn as a pendant. As early as 1805, craftsmen began using shell for cameos because it was easily carved due to its many layers, as compared to onyx or agate. Designs throughout history include many subjects. But, the most common of all is that of a noble Romanesque maiden with classic features, Roman dress, jewelry and intricately, often floral embellished hair. This cameo measures 25 MM by 18.4 MM and has no cracks or chips. It depicts the profile of a prominent woman with much attention paid to the details in her hair, dress and facial features. The brooch is decorated with ten (10) round, white, genuine cultured 3.5 MM pearls with nice luster and opalescence and very minor natural surface imperfections. The frame includes filigree details and has a pin back with a secure lock. The brooch is marked, tested and guaranteed 14K and has been professionally cleaned and lightly polished. It weighs a substantial 10.1 grams and might also make a great gift for that someone special with a June birthday as that month's birthstone is the pearl. 27300
