PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This is a most impressive antique carved shell cameo and 14K yellow gold brooch measuring 2 5/8 inches (67.4 MM) long by 2 inches (51.9 MM) wide with a hinged ring enabling it to also be worn as a pendant. As early as 1805, craftsmen began using shell for cameos because it was easily carved due to its many layers, as compared to onyx or agate. Designs throughout history include many subjects. But, the most common of all is that of a noble Romanesque maiden with classic features, Roman dress, jewelry and intricately, often floral embellished hair. This is the largest cameo we seen to date, and due to its size, more intricate details have been incorporated into the beautifully hand carved piece. There are no chips or cracks, even when held up to a light source. The cameo is expertly bezel set in a yellow gold filigree detailed frame, and the brooch has a secure pin back with a lock. It is marked, tested and guaranteed 14K and has been professionally cleaned and brightly polished. The brooch weighs a substantial 22.3 grams. 26998
